About the September 25, 2025 webinar:
Nuclear Incidents and Accidents: Past, Present, Future Presentation Overview: Radiation has always been part of our planet, but the discovery of radiation was not made until 1895 when Roentgen discovered X-rays and then in 1896 with the identification of radioactive elements. Since that time, radiation has been used for the benefit of humanity in medical exposures, nuclear power, and others; but also to the detriment of humanity with the use of atomic bombs and nuclear weapons. This talk will examine both sides of these uses, including the need for continued regulation and vigilance, the development of new tools and technologies for mitigation of radiation effects, and the possible risks associated with failure to appropriately regulate. Presenter’s Background: Gayle Woloschak is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and Associate Dean of The Graduate School at Northwestern. She has a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and a D Min in Orthodox Christian Theology. She is active in the radiation community serving as a member of the US delegation to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, Scientific Vice President for the National Council on Radiation Protection, Co-chair of Committee 1 for the International Commission on Radiation Protection. She also teaches courses related to theology at Lutheran School of Theology Chicago and St Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary. She has published over 250 papers and edits several journals. |
