The Student Scholarship
The Institute on Religion in an Age of Science (IRAS) offers up to two (2) student scholarships/assistantships for its annual Summer Conferences. The stipend covers the Scholar’s registration fee, and room and board. Student scholarship recipients will be responsible for their own transportation costs. In return, the Scholar is expected to assist the Conference Coordinator by performing certain essential tasks such as operating the sound/recording system, working on the conference daily newspaper or other tasks as required. The performance of this work will not interfere with the Scholar’s ability to attend any of the scheduled sessions of the Conference.
Preference is given to individuals who are currently pursuing a degree, are first time attendees to the IRAS Summer Conferences and whose interests are congruent with the goals and purpose of IRAS. The scholarship recipients will be determined by the IRAS Scholarship Committee in collaboration with the Conference Coordinator and the Conference Chairpersons.
To apply for a scholarship, please provide the following information and email to Jane Bengtson, Chair of the Scholarship Committee.

Star Island Financial Grants Program
We encourage people who are on the fence about coming to apply for a financial grant.
- Financial grants typically cover a portion of room and board, not the full amount.
- Grants do not cover the conference program fees.
- If you are registering for a conference with their own financial aid program, your grant applications will be considered by both Star Island's and the conference's grant programs. You may be awarded a grant from both the conference and SIC based on your need.
- There is no limit on how many years you can apply to the program.
- Applications to the Star Island Financial Grants Program are held in strict confidence and reviewed only by the Island Registrar and the Conference's Financial Aid Committee (with your permission).
ISAUU Grants to UU Religious Professionals
Financial grants are available through the Isles of Shoals Association Unitarian Universalist (ISAUU) for Unitarian Universalist Religious Professionals who have never attended a Star Island conference. Apply through the financial grant application.
